The Lifespan of Hair Extensions

With maximum care, your hair extensions can last up to a year or even longer, depending on how often they are worn. The more you wash and style your extensions, the shorter their lifespan will be, so keep washing and using additional products to a minimum. The important thing to remember is that your hair extensions don’t have a natural hydration source like your own hair does, so keeping them moisturized and reducing dryness is crucial.

Storing Hair Extensions

It’s really important you get into a good routine with your hair extensions from the start, because good habits = longer lasting extensions. The beautiful pink box in which your Luxies arrive to you in can actually be re-used to store your hair extensions.

Get Your Own Luxy Hair

When prepping your hair extensions for storage, we recommend to gather all the hair together and carefully brush out the extensions from the bottom of the hair slowly working upwards. If you come across a particularly pesky knot, take out the individual weft and brush it through gently. Always be gentle when brushing your extensions to reduce shedding and breakage.

Once you have brushed your extensions out, use a hair tie to secure the hair close to the base of the weft as a ponytail, then gently roll the extensions into a circle and place into the box.

Quick tip: You can also gently knot the hair together if you want a light wave running throughout the hair the next time you wear your extensions.

Preventing Tangling

Luxy Hair extensions are made of 100% remy human hair. All hair extensions, however, can and may tangle – it’s normal and to be expected. The reason being is because tangles are caused by the friction of your natural hair rubbing against your hair extensions, which is why we never recommend you sleep, shower or swim with your extensions in. This will only mix all the hair together and create knots.

The best way to keep your extensions tangle-free is to keep on top of regular brushing. Always have a paddle brush on hand so that even when you’re out and about you can still give your hair a quick run through. Make sure you brush your extensions every time you apply and remove them.

Watch the video below for a demonstration on how to brush through your clip-in hair extensions.

How to Reduce Shedding

On average, your natural hair will shed approximately 100 strands a day, and because our hair extensions are made of natural hair, you can expect some shedding throughout its lifespan. Every time you brush or style your extensions there will be light shedding, so don’t be surprised or worried when this happens. This, however, does not mean to reduce the amount you brush your extensions. You can minimize shedding in other ways.

Washing your extensions too much will dry out the hair which may cause them to shed. The more products you use, the more you will need to wash your extensions, so the best way to reduce shedding is to use a minimal amount of products when styling your hair.

Your extensions have a beautiful, healthy finish already so you shouldn’t need much product to enjoy them. If you want more hold when curling your extensions, try pinning up the curls and leaving them overnight or even just for an hour to ensure the curls stay in place without the use of hairspray. If you do want to reach for hairspray, consider a lightweight formula which you can still easily brush through. Extra strength hairsprays will clog up your extensions, which means more washing.

How Often Should I Wash my Hair Extensions?

Hair extensions don’t need to be washed as much as our natural hair. The less you wash your extensions, the longer they will last you.

Whilst natural hair needs regular washing due to oil being produced from the scalp, hair extensions are not attached to our scalp and therefore do not endure the same oil build-up and only need washing when there is too much product in them. We find it is best to wash your hair extensions every 15-20 wears.

Bottom line is, how often you wash your extensions is mostly down to your personal routine, so it’s important you pay close attention on the quality of your extensions. If your extensions feel like they’re becoming increasingly difficult to style, this is a likely a sign that there is product build-up and they need to be washed.

Washing your Extensions

When washing your extensions, it’s important you hydrate them as much as possible. Since hair extensions don’t receive the natural nutrients and oils from the scalp like our own hair does, it’s important to ensure that your set is always nourished and moisturized, as this will help keep it looking healthy. We recommend to stay away from products that include sulfate and alcohol as these ingredients will help dry the hair out.

Coloring/Dyeing Your Extensions

Of course, it is best to match your hair color to the closest Luxy shade we offer. We have a variety of different shades to choose from. If you are ever uncertain of your ideal Luxy match, simply e-mail our Support team at with a photo of your hair taken in natural lighting – it will be our pleasure to help you!

Hair extensions that are made of 100% remy human hair can be dyed a darker color. If you do decide that you want to colour your extensions, it’s always best to head straight to the salon and find a professional who is experienced in working with extensions as you’re unlikely to run into problems this way.

We do not, however, recommend bleaching your hair extensions as they have likely already been dyed at the manufacturing level. Forcing bleach on hair that has already been dyed can be difficult, and finding alternatives like increasing the concentration of bleach or leaving it in longer to soak will only lead to damaged hair. Also, keep in mind that the color may not come out as intended because of the existing hair dye.

When coloring your extensions, we recommend to have a one clip weft tested first prior to dyeing the full set to ensure that you’re satisfied with the results.

Blending in Hair Extensions with Short Hair

If your natural hair is shorter than your hair extensions, then you may find your shorter strands separate from the extensions throughout the day and make it obvious you’re wearing hair extensions. Don’t fret – we’ve got a great way you can hide your shorter hairs to ensure your hair extensions blend in as naturally as possible.

First off, take out the three clip weft from the nape of your neck, and then gather all of your natural shorter hair strands together at the back. Clip the rest of your hair up and out of the way.

Create a three strand braid with the shorter hair, and secure at the end with a clear elastic. Roll your braid into a circle until it coils then clip to the nape of your neck. This braid will then work as a base for your three clip weft.

Release the rest of your hair, and all those shorter strands will be hidden away.

And Finally!

Remember everyone’s hair is different, so it’s always best to keep an eye on your own natural hair and your extensions to see how often they need to be washed and which products are best to use. Like natural hair, the best way to reduce damage is to keep things as hands-off as possible (except with the brushing!) and to avoid over-styling and over-washing.

With a good routine, you can wear your extensions for months on end and enjoy fuller, thicker and healthier looking locks.
