Hair Extensions Myths: Common Misconceptions

In this blog post, we’re talking all about hair extensions and some common misconceptions!

This blog post should be really helpful if you’re not familiar with hair extensions, or if you’re in the market for some new clip-in hair extensions, but you’re still on edge about them. Whether you’ve had a bad experience before, if you are a first-time hair extensions buyer, or simply heard some bad things about hair extensions in general – keep reading or watch this video:

Hair Extensions Myth #1:

Hair extensions will leave your hair damaged, broken, and extremely thin.

That is definitely not the case with clip-in hair extensions! They don’t pull out your hair because you take them out at night, and only wear them when you want to enhance the length and thickness of your hair. If clipped in properly, clip-in hair extensions cause absolutely no damage to your hair.

There are different hair extension application methods out there, about which you should do thorough research prior to committing. Out of all – skin wefting, micro-linking, tape-ins or keratin fusion – clip-in hair extensions are safest, and fastest way to get longer, thicker hair. Other permanent hair extensions may cause some damage to your hair over a long period of time, whereas temporary methods like clip-ins are worn on a selective basis and allow your hair to ‘breathe’ and rest when the extensions aren’t being worn.

If you are experiencing alopecia, we strongly suggest to consult your healthcare professional for advice on whether wearing hair extensions is right for you.

Hair Extensions Myth #2:

Hair extensions won’t blend in.

Another common misconception is that the hair extensions won’t blend in. The thing is – if you choose the right set of hair extensions for your hair type, and practice clipping them in – the extensions will blend in seamlessly with your hair. Here are just a few different ways on how to properly clip-in hair extensions:

How to clip-in hair extensions:

With Luxy Hair clip-in hair extensions in particular, there are 3 different weights you can select from. The 120g sets are designed for those who have thin hair and not a lot of it. The 160g sets are designed for those who have an average amount of hair, but are looking to add more length and volume while still maintaining a natural look. The 220g sets are designed for those who have thick hair, a lot of hair, blunt haircuts or short hair.

It’s really important to choose the set according to your hair for an ideal and seamless blend, because that way – nobody will be able to tell that you’re wearing extensions!

Hair Extensions Myth #3:

The extension tracks will show.

If they are clipped in properly, these hair extensions will not be visible at all, even if you move around a lot! The trick is to clip them in in your ‘safe’ zone, below your eyebrow line, and have enough hair to cover the wefts. Hair Extensions Myth #4:

Extra hair will weigh you down and give you headaches.

Of course it will feel a bit heavier than normal, because you are clipping something into your hair. If you clip in 220 grams of hair extensions, it will feel exactly 220 grams heavier! If you had that much hair naturally, that’s how it would feel, because the actual tracks and clips of Luxy Hair extensions are super lightweight and comfortable. If you are a first time extensions wearer, you definitely get used to how hair extensions feel in your head and you start not even noticing them after a little while.

Some people may get headaches if they have super sensitive scalps – but those are the people who also may get headaches from even tying a regular ponytail too tight.

The trick to not get any headaches when wearing clip-in hair extensions is to clip them in slightly lower on your hair, rather than right at the scalp.

That way, there is more lenience on your scalp. Luxy Hair extensions have a silicone grip on every single clip, so you can be sure that they won’t slide down further and will securely stay in your hair. For extra support, though, you can also tease the hair a little bit below of where you want to clip in the weft.

Hair Extensions Myth #5:

Hair extensions tangle and are high maintenance.

Clip-in hair extensions do not need professional salon care! You can take good care of your set yourself, just as you would with your own hair. Since hair extensions aren’t attached to your scalp, they don’t get oily – and therefore, they don’t even need to be washed that often. They only need to be washed every 15-20 wears when there is a significant buildup of hairspray or other hair products. You can learn how to wash clip-in hair extensions yourself by reading this post. Of course, all hair extensions – and hair, for that matter – are prone to some tangling. The extent to which the hair tangles depends on the quality of the hair extensions and also how well you take care of them. If the extensions are made of remy human hair and are of Chinese origin, there should be minimal tangling that occurs naturally.

If your own hair is prone to tangling, then it may naturally cause the extensions to tangle with it – but as long as you brush the hair out periodically, just like you would with your own hair, this should not be an issue at all. We’ve written a great blog post on why your hair tangles and how to prevent it: click here to check it out!
