How to Wash Clip-In Hair Extensions [Updated]
Now that you are a proud owner of your very own set of Luxy Hair extensions, it is important to care for them properly to ensure they remain looking luscious, smooth, and shiny. If given the proper TLC they deserve, Luxies can last anywhere from 3-6 months, or even up to a year or longer!
Luxy Hair extensions are made with 100% remy human hair, however, since they don’t receive natural oils from the scalp like our own hair does, they don’t need to be washed as often as your own hair. In fact, we recommend to only wash your Luxies every 15-20 wears or when there is a lot of product build-up to the point where they become unmanageable to style.
In this blog post, we’ll give you the run down on how to get your extensions squeaky clean, as well as how to restore moisture and shine. Remember, the less you wash your extensions, the longer they’ll last. Watch our quick video tutorial below or keep scrolling down for a step-by-step guide.
Step 1: Brush your extensions
The first and quite possibly one of the most important steps is to brush your extensions out before getting them wet. This helps minimize the possibility of tangling during and after you have washed the hair. When brushing your extensions, we recommend to start from bottom to top in order to gently remove any tough knots without pulling the hair out. We recommend to use a wide-tooth comb or a soft bristle brush when working on your extensions.
In preparation for the wash, neatly place your wefts on top of each other in a bundle, similar to the same way as when you first received them. This will help ensure the hair does not tangle with the clips during the washing process.
Step 2: Prepare your sink
Ensure your sink is squeaky clean, plug the drain and begin to fill it up with luke warm water – we don’t want the water to be too hot or too cold.
Squirt about 2-3 pumps or a small handful of shampoo in to the water and wave the water around to ensure the product is evenly dispersed. When working with your extensions, we recommend to use hair products that are alcohol free, sulfate free, and designed for coloured treated hair or extensions in order to ensure the color is preserved.
Step 3: Shampoo each weft
We recommend to split your set up in to small, manageable chunks of wefts (for example, collect all of your one clips wefts in to one bundle) to ensure every weft gets washed thoroughly and equally. Alternatively, if you’re short on time, you can bundle up the entire set and wash it all in one go.
Hold the top of the wefts in one hand, dunk them in to the water and start washing them. Gently work the shampoo into the hair with your fingers with light strokes, as we don’t want to tangle the hair.
Once you’re finished that bundle of wefts, set them aside neatly on a towel and repeat the same thing to the rest of the extensions.
Step 4: Condition your extensions
This is a very important step as it helps ensure that your extensions remain moisturized, nourished, and soft. You can use regular conditioner or a deep conditioning hair treatment – either one will work.
Take a generous amount of conditioner or hair treatment and apply on each bundle of wefts from top to bottom, massaging the product thoroughly into the hair.
In order for the product to really soak in and work it’s magic, we highly recommend to leave it on for at least an hour. Ideally, it would be best if the treatment was left on overnight. If this is the case, we recommend to put your extensions in a shower cap to leave overnight. This will help to seal in the moisture and really condition the hair.
Once that time has passed, all you have to do now is rinse out the conditioner. Be sure to rinse out each weft thoroughly, otherwise, if there is product residue on the hair it may feel a bit greasy once it has dried, which is a big no-no.
When you’re washing out each bundle or weft, we recommend to blast cold water on the hair for the last 10 seconds – bear with us, we know your hands will be cold, but this will help close the cuticles of the hair to seal in the moisture and make the extensions more shiny. Trust us – it’ll be worth it.
Step 5: Let the extensions air dry
Before setting up your extensions to dry, be sure that the hair is completely wringed of water. We highly recommend to air dry the extensions in order to prolong their lifespan, as oppose to using heat. This is because using heat on hair that is not being constantly revitalized at the scalp can harm them in the long run. If you do decide to use a blowdryer, be sure to use a heat protectant spray and set it to cool air to prevent damage.
Lay out all of your wefts separately on a towel on a flat surface. A trick to preventing any frizz once the hair drys is to apply a small amount of hair oil to each weft to ensure the hair remains manageable and silky smooth.
Step 6: Comb each weft
Typically, we never recommend to comb through wet hair as it’s more elastic and can break easily, however, in order to ensure that your extensions dry straight with little to no tangles, we recommend to gently brush through each weft with a wide tooth comb from bottom to top.
And that’s it! If you follow these 6 easy steps when washing your extensions, they will last longer and maintain their beautiful look.
FAQ About Washing Hair Extensions
Q: How often should I wash my clip-in hair extensions?
A: The less you wash your hair extensions, the longer they will last you. We recommend to wash your hair extensions every 15-20 wears or so, depending on how much product you use on them. Remember, since the hair extensions aren’t actually attached to your scalp, they don’t get oily like your natural hair and therefore don’t need to be washed as often. The only reason you need to wash your hair extensions is to get rid of excess product buildup, or if you’ve worn your hair extensions about 15-20 times and they need some refreshing.
Q: Do I need to wash my Luxy Hair extensions before I wear them?
A: No, Luxy Hair extensions are ready to wear straight out of the box! You do not need to wash them before wearing. Hair extensions are a hygienic product and therefore is completely safe to wear right out of the box.
Q: What products should I use on my clip-in Luxy Hair extensions?
A: We highly recommend to use natural, and organic hair products if possible. Make sure the hair products are sulfate free, alcohol free, and are designed for color treated hair or hair extensions. This will ensure that your hair extensions have a longer lifespan.
Q: Do I need to wash my clip-in hair extensions after curling to make them straight again?
A: It’s an option, but again, unless the hair has lots of hairspray and other product buildup, we wouldn’t recommend it. Instead, you can gently brush the curls and the product out with a soft bristle brush from bottom to top, use heat protectant, and use a hair straightener on a low to medium heat setting to straighten the set. Luxy Hair extensions are real remy human hair, therefore, can be washed and styled just like your own hair.
Q: Do these hair extensions dry straight?
A: Luxy Hair extensions are of Chinese origin, therefore, should dry straight. Be sure to brush the extensions straight before air-drying overnight. Some sets could be potentially dry with some beach waves, however, as mentioned earlier, can be styled with hot styling tools to achieve any desired look. Just be sure to always use heat protectant and your heat styling tools on a low to medium setting.
Q: Why aren’t you washing the actual clips/wefts in this video?
A: This is a personal preference. If you feel the tops of the tracks and clips need to be washed as well, you can definitely dunk the entire set under the water and wash the same way. If the main reason for washing is to refresh the hair itself and get rid of product buildup, not washing the tops of the wefts is simply a personal choice. This will also help the hair extensions air-dry faster. You can clean the clips separately with a Q-Tip.
